Naughty Hildegard ESB
For our redesign of Driftwood Brewery’s Naughty Hildegard, an ESB named in honour of Benedictine abbess Hildegard Von Bingen, we decided to focus on her famed discovery of hops as a preservative in beer by using a classic, contemplative pose, reminiscent of religious iconography, and paying special attention to colour design as a way to draw the viewer’s attention from Hilde’s gaze to her hand. Delicate skin tones stand in sharp contrast with the flat black of her habit, all backlit by stained glass with its geometric panels of saturated red and glowing yellow-green.
Brewed to honour Hildegard von Bingen, a 12th Century Benedictine abbess, composer, and writer who is considered the founder of scientific natural history in Germany. Her treatise on medicine, “Physica Sacra,” contains the first recorded use of hops as a preventative in beer. This ESB is strong and generously hopped. For Hildegard.
